Frequently Asked Questions

Convertible Soft Top Cleaning & Reproofing in London & Surrounding Areas

Let’s be honest — soft tops don’t have it easy. Whether it’s city smog, tree sap, the great British weather, or just good old-fashioned neglect, convertible roofs take a hit. They fade, stain, collect moss, and before you know it, your sleek cabriolet is starting to look... well, a bit sorry for itself.

That’s exactly why we created our soft top cleaning and reproofing service. At The Valeters, we help convertible owners across London and surrounding areas get their roofs looking fresh again — and protected for the long haul. Best part? We come to you.

Why Soft Tops Need a Little Extra Love

Soft tops aren't like the rest of your car's bodywork. They're made from specialist fabric or vinyl that can soak up grime like a sponge and hold onto moisture. And if your car lives outside (especially near trees), you’re basically inviting moss and mould to move in rent-free.

You might notice the colour fading, green streaks forming, or water starting to soak in instead of beading off. Sound familiar? That’s your roof crying out for a deep clean and some protection — and that’s where we come in.

Here’s How We Do It (And Why It Works)

We start with a close-up inspection of the roof. No two soft tops are the same, and we tailor our approach depending on what we're dealing with — fabric or vinyl, light or dark colours, heavy moss or just surface grime.

Next, we apply a biocidal pre-treatment that kills off any algae, mould, and bacteria living in the fabric. Then comes the deep clean — gentle brushes, soft fibre agitation, and low-pressure rinsing to lift all that gunk without damaging the material.

Once the roof is clean and fully dry, it’s time for the star of the show: the reproofing treatment. This is a water-repellent coating (also known as DWR) that restores the roof’s ability to bead water, resist UV damage, and even brings back that rich, dark colour most soft tops had when they were new.

For vinyl roofs, we switch things up with vinyl-safe products that clean and condition the surface without drying it out or leaving greasy residues.

What Exactly Is Reproofing?

Reproofing is basically your roof’s raincoat. Over time, the original water-repellent layer on your soft top wears away — from washing, sun exposure, and the weather doing its thing.

Without it, rain stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in. That can lead to mildew inside the fabric, leaks, or just a grubby look that won’t shift with a regular wash.

Our professional reproofing treatment puts that protective layer back on. Water beads up, UV rays are blocked, and your roof stays cleaner for longer. It's a game-changer — especially if you’ve got an older car or one that's parked outside most of the time.

Mobile Valeting That Actually Works Around You

We get it — taking your car to a detailer isn’t always convenient. That’s why we’re fully mobile. Whether you’re at home, at work, or even at the gym, we’ll come to you with everything we need to get the job done right. No need for water or power access either — we’re self-sufficient.

We cover a wide area too, including:

London, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, BromleyWeybridge, Cobham, Twickenham and most places in between.

Not sure if you’re in range? Drop us a message and we’ll let you know.

How Often Should You Get Your Soft Top Cleaned?

It really depends on how and where you use your car. As a general rule of thumb, clean and reproof it every 6 monthsIf your car lives outside (especially under trees), you might want to do it more often. You’ll know it’s time when you see water soaking in instead of beading up, or when the green stuff starts creeping back.

Real Results in Just One Visit

In most cases, you’ll see a massive visual improvement right after the service. The roof will look darker, cleaner, and fresh. Water will bead right off, and the whole car will just feel more polished and cared for.

That said, if the roof’s been neglected for a while — or if it’s a light colour — you might still see some faint staining or “ghost” marks. We always work safely and never scrub aggressively. Protecting the fabric comes first.

Let’s Get That Roof Sorted

If your soft top’s looking tired, don’t wait for it to get worse. A deep clean and proper reproofing could be the difference between restoring your roof — or replacing it down the line. Whether you’ve got a BMW, Audi, Mini, or classic drop-top, we treat every car like it’s our own.

One Last Thought...

Owning a convertible is meant to be fun — but the roof often gets overlooked until it’s too late. With regular cleaning and reproofing, you’ll keep it looking sharp, protected from the elements, and turning heads wherever you drive.

Let us help you bring back that soft top pride. We’ll make it look easy — and we’ll come to you.
